Why?
Because DHT is a potent androgen, it shrinks hair follicles, causes sebaceous glands to overproduce oil, and stimulates the continuous growth of prostate tissue. Saw palmetto inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
High DHT in Men
Excess dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in men is primarily linked to hair thinning, androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness), oily skin/acne, prostate enlargement, Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The herb is approved by German Commission E for use in stages I and II of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to aid dysuria.
High DHT in Women
Yes, women can have high Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). While DHT is primarily associated with men, it is also a naturally occurring hormone in women. When levels become too high, it leads to "hyperandrogenism", causing symptoms like female pattern hair loss, excess facial or body hair, persistent acne, and irregular periods.
